No one says "no" to a lucky charm. And the most common lucky charm in almost every culture is the horseshoe, with many people believing that hanging a horseshoe above a door brings good luck.

The horseshoe is believed to bring luck and protection . The origin of horseshoe luck comes from several different stories and myths. We will discuss the different origins of these lucky virtues.

Its reputation as a lucky charm most certainly comes from the fact that there was a time when the horseshoes were badly fixed. It sometimes happened that the shoe came off the horse 's hoof . The peasant who passed by and was lucky enough to find it on his way could then resell it to the blacksmith, thus allowing him to obtain a few coins!

THE MOST WIDESPREAD LEGEND: IRISH HISTORY

In Irish history, the legend of Saint Dunstan : Dunstan was a simple man, a blacksmith , in 10th century Britain. One night the devil visited him and asked him to put a horseshoe on his horse. Instead of putting the shoe on the horse, Dunstan nailed the horseshoe to the devil. In pain, the devil begged Dunstan to remove the horseshoe; Dunstan agreed, but on one condition. The devil had to promise to stay away from all houses whose entrance was surmounted by a horseshoe. Thus, Dunstan became the Archbishop of Canterbury and was elevated to sainthood.


THE HORSESHOE, A MAGICAL PROTECTION

The superstition and the " magical " aspect of the horseshoe comes partly from the Greeks and also from Christianity. They thought that the horseshoe had a repulsive power over evil. Moreover, it had a crescent shape. The crescent was at the time synonymous with fertility and luck . This superstition was later accepted by Christians who used it to scare away evil creatures and the devil.


Another myth concerns the metal in horseshoes. According to the first Western Europeans, iron would have powers linked to magic. He would scare away evil. At the time, the stories were about magical creatures, evil fairies or witches. Since horseshoes were made mostly of iron, they repelled evil fairies.

A legend has it that witches use broomsticks rather than horses to get around because the horseshoes scare them.

NUMBER 7: THE HOLES IN THE HORSESHOE

The holes in a horseshoe, called " cuts " also bring good luck. Horseshoes have seven holes. These holes allow it to hold better in the horse's hoof.
