BIG RED Dubbed "the gear of the Clark horses" by Vogue, Secretariat has consistently swept the competition: Their times in the three Triple Crown races remain the fastest in history . He was called the "Big Red", a horse that seemed to be aware of its size and enjoyed it. The Secretariat's owner, Penny Chenery, told writer Lawrence Scanlon that the Secretariat "was the most remarkable event of my life after giving birth to my children." Was Secretariat the World's Fastest Horse ? A STRONG COAL Secretariat was born in a Virginia barn that was nearly sold off when owner Chris Chenery fell ill. But Chenery's daughter Penny resisted pressure from her siblings to sell the financially distressed Meadow Farm and instead took matters into her own hands and made it profitable. In 1969 Penny Chenery decided to breed Somethingroyal, a barn mare, to breed the Bold Ruler, producing the couple's second breeding , Secretariat . The colt that gave birth to Secretariat, who was born at 12:10 on March 30, 1970, appeared for the first time. Chunky to Howard Gentry , the corrections manager . As Gentry reports, the young horse is " tall ,Eddie Sweat , who had become Secretariat 's loyal groom, was not impressed when he first encountered the horse . Sweat told Canadian Horseman in 1973: "When we first got him, I didn't think much of him. I thought he was just a big clown. He was very clumsy and a little wild. , You know. And I remember thinking to myself that I didn't think he would be an extraordinary horse." A DIFFICULT START But by the age of two, the young Secretariat had found her legs again, and under the guidance of Lucien Laurin , she began to show the world how strong she was. It was about 16.2 hands ( 1.64 meters ) tall and weighed 533 kilograms with a circumference of 190 centimeters . Penny Chenery's father Chris died in January, and Penny faced a daunting tax bill. Penny Chenery was able to syndicate Secretariat to keep the stable, selling 32 shares of the horse for a record $6.08 million. On its 1973 debut at the Aqueduct Raceway, growing stronger through the winter, Secretariat proved it was worth every penny. He battled in wet conditions and on a crowded field to win by four and a half lengths. Secretariat took the lead once again to declare victory in their next run in the Gotham Stakes. If Secretariat disappointed, this was his next run in the Wood Memorial Stakes. Prior to the race, an abscess was discovered in the upper part of his mouth, possibly resulting from a burr in his straw. Audience Eddie Sweat would tell the Thoroughbred Record six years later that the abscess was making the horse very "disturbing". Big Red finished third, four lengths behind Angle Light, who won this race. On the way to the Kentucky Derby, the loss crushed the armor of a horse that was considered a safe bet. VICTORY IN THE KENTUCKY DERBY After the Wood Memorial race, the Secretariat team punctured the abscess and it healed. Two weeks later, on race day at the 1973 Kentucky Derby, Secretariat was ready to dominate again, and it was. Despite his last escape, SecretariatHe sped the race every quarter mile and still finished with a course record of 1:59 2/5. Instead, it came off the grill quickly, providing good placement along the inside lane. SINGLE SECRETARIAT In the decades since Secretariat achieved the Triple Crown , record times at the Kentucky Derby , Preakness and Belmont Stakes remain unmatched. He was the only non-human to make it to ESPN's 50 Greatest Athletes of the Century list in 1999 and became the first purebred to be honored with his own US postage stamp . There, she gave birth to 582 puppies, including 41 stock winners. But none of its descendants have been compared to the original. "A lot of people who were misinformed thought it could reproduce," Claiborne executive John Sosby told People magazine in 1988. "But it doesn't work that way. There is only one secretariat". The veterinarian who performed the autopsy, Dr. Thomas Swerczek reported that he discovered that the heart of this horse, weighing between 21 and 22 pounds, was the largest he had ever seen in a horse. "We were all shocked," Swerczek told Sports Illustrated in 1990. "I've seen and done thousands of autopsies on horses and I've never seen anything like it."
